The Silicon Dragon is very very real…

I recently read an article by Rebecca Fannin about the rise of China’s technology entrepreneurs.  She refers to their tech culture as the “Silicon Dragon”.  Maybe I’ve been asleep at the switch, but I hadn’t heard the term before.

Fast forward to this evening’s Olympic opening ceremony.  Watching it in HD on NBC, my jaw dropped repeatedly.  I challenge anyone to point to any comparable event for the sheer scale, aesthetics, creativity and technology demonstrated in Zhang Yimou’s incredible display.

From the huge LED display to the projections on the roof of the stadium to the enormous array of closely coordinated fireworks, the combination of technology with Cirque Du Soleil style choreography was stunning.  And it just kept going.

Yes, China has many problems.  But like Japan and Korea before it, China is clearly evolving from a cheap copy-cat nation to a powerful innovator who’s voice will be heard.  You’d be a fool to ignore it.

p.s. I have a ton of affection for my homeland, but I really wouldn’t want to be in their shoes come 2012.

All done with BarCampRDU 2008…

Spent Saturday at BarCampRDU.  It was good to catch up with some folks I haven’t seen in a while.

It seemed to me that attendance was a little light, and a couple of folks pointed out that no email reminders were sent out before the event, but the day was still fun.

I did two sessions:  “10 Ways to Improve Sales” and the seemingly well received “10 Ways to Accelerate Failure in a Startup”, an uncomfortably factually-based look at mistakes I’ve seen and made…  I got to present the latter with the fabulous Jim Meyer of LinkedIn. I met Jim at BarCampRDU 2007 when it turned out we had some overlap in our earlier careers.

Jim also did an excellent session on values and how they can play in to work and personal life.  He’s done a much better job of figuring that out than me at this point.

I’ll be putting both presentations online shortly.  Great to see everyone.
